And so the 2013 college football season ended Monday night with a shattering of streaks. Gone is the SEC's seven-year BCS championship streak. Gone is the state of Alabama's four-year title streak. It was bound to happen sometime. But as they have so many times before this season, Auburn made it interesting before the streaks finally went down.I saw a Tiger team that played its guts out at the Rose Bowl. I saw Tre Mason and the Auburn running game do what it's done all year. I saw a brilliant defensive game plan by Ellis Johnson that flustered Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston and masked the Tiger defense's deficiencies through the first half, and then I saw Jimbo Fisher and Florida State adjust to that game plan and take control of the second half.I saw Winston, for whom everything on the field had come so easily this year, stand up and respond when things got difficult.I saw a great final championship game for the BCS, a game that was won, not lost. Yes, the Tigers made mistakes, but they also made Florida State earn the trophy. What did you see?Last week in New Orleans, meanwhile, I saw Oklahoma quarterback Trevor Knight do in the Sugar Bowl what he hadn't done all year -- throw the ball around like Drew Brees. OU head coach Bob Stoops talked all week about running certain plays with certain quarterbacks and wanting to keep Alabama guessing about which -- Knight or Blake Bell -- would play the game. Then he went out and devised a game plan that did exactly the opposite of what he'd done all year with his selected starter. It was brilliant because Knight proved he could execute it, and nobody saw it coming.I also, however, saw an Alabama team that lacked the sense of urgency it normally plays with. It wasn't like the 2009 Sugar Bowl, when the Tide clearly had no interest in even being in New Orleans, but it was the first time many of these players had prepared for a bowl game in which a national title wasn't on the line. They wanted to send the seniors our right, I'm sure. I'm not sure that was enough of a purpose to maintain the same kind of edge they'd played with earlier in the season. And I'm sure they weren't ready for the gunslinger version of Trevor Knight. That's what I saw.
