One of thethorniest issues awaiting Alabama lawmakers during the upcoming 2014legislative session is whether to legalize a drug derived from marijuana.
State Rep.Mike Ball, R-Madison, is sponsoring a bill that would , orcannabidiol - an oil that comes from marijuana but does not produce anyintoxicating effects.
The bill isnamed "Carly's Law" for Carly Chandler, a child from the Birmingham suburb ofInverness who suffers from a rare genetic disorder that causes violent seizures. Her parents say CBD, which is legal inColorado and a handful of other states, has proven effective at treating severeseizures that prescription medicine cannot control.
."If my child was having 300 seizures a monthand there was something I could give them that would cut it down to four, bygolly, this gentleman would be making sure I got it," said Sanford."And I'll be frank: If it meant I had to break the law, I would break thelaw so I wouldn't have to watch my infant child go through something like that.
"If that makes me a bad person, so beit. I think it would make me a great parent, to be honest."
If you werein the Legislature, would you vote to legalize CBD as a treatment forchildren with seizure disorders?
