The following work was completed under an ECO4 grant: - Air Source Heat Pump - Ventilation - Cavity wall insulation - Internal wall insulation - Solar panels The work was commissioned in Feb 2023 and completed in October 2024.

"Truly and without exaggeration, one of the worst and enduringly awful experiences of my life. I am sharing this review in the hope it might help others consider carefully before approaching companies such as Consumer Energy Solutions.

In Jan 2023, I had been suffering badly with chronic insomnia. I contacted Consumer Energy Solutions with the hope of a greener, warmer and more affordable home. Unfortunately, they failed spectacularly on all accounts.

The initial survey determined the heat loss for the house, but missed and undersized windows, missed fireplaces and wrongly specified the suitability of the house for internal and cavity wall insulation. As a result, the estimated heat loss was c.half of the correct value, leading to a solution that was entirely unfit for the property, however, cost the supplier considerably less to install at the outset.

Energy use for the house was c.£15 - £20 per day during Winter 2023 / 2024 and completely unaffordable. At the same time, the house would not heat past 18 degrees. It took Consumer Energy c.20 months to resolve these issues and only when pressured to do so by an industry body (HIES).

It gets worse...

The roof of the house was already badly bowing at the time of install, however, Consumer Energy reassured me that everything was fine. They recorded the wrong rafter sizes (bigger than in reality) and missed vital warning signs that the roof was at risk of collapse.

The panels were added and the roof creaked and cracked badly for months until it was obvious something really bad was wrong. A structural engineer confirmed the roof did not meet modern standards and a repair was agreed. However, on uncovering the roof, the rafters were not connected to the joists and the whole thing needed replacing. The full obligation / cost of replacing the roof has fallen upon myself. As a result.

At the same time, the cavity walls were only part filled and later found to be just 40mm thick and contain a large amount of rubble. It's a small house with two large chimneys, leaving large parts of the home poorly or completely uninsulated.

In other areas, the suitability of the house for internal insulation was mis-represented by Consumer Energy Solutions to grant providers. The company plastered instead of insulated to make it look like the work had been completed to spec.

As the correct heat loss was double that provided, the heat pump is now under-sized for the house. The radiator sizes have had to be changed on two seperate occasions, all leading to significant disruption.

Throughout the process, Consumer Energy, a company that has grown from nothing to £300m+ turnover in just a few short years, relied on 3rd party contractors, with no care as to the outcome of the install in terms of its ability to heat the home reliably and economically. Some of the people who have been here to install or adjust a heat pump have had no prior experience in doing so. The initial install included faulty parts, wrongly sized pipes and the flow of one heating zone plumbed into the flow of another. Etc etc. The situation represents a company growing far beyond its capability.

As a consequence, I have lost to poverty. My daughter has been unable to stay. I have had to pay to replace the roof in its entirity. Have had no working heating for 2 winters. Have slept on the sofa without a bedroom for nearly a year. And the maximum recourse available to the ombudsman is £10,000 including the cost of the service itself...though, this amount is rarely paid.

I now have little recourse, other than to file via the courts.

Whilst there are some good people and the company (I hope) is trying to change, they are ultimately a sales business with deeply questionable values working hard to extract as much money from the government as they can, seemingly with little consequence.

I encourage anyone going near ECO4 to fully understand the heat loss of their home and approach CES with extreme caution."

Loft insulation, internal wall insulation, solar panels, heat exchange pump, cavity wall insulation

"I was ill prepared for exactly what was expected of me and how to prepare for this work. And calls to the company in some cases took 30 minutes on hold to speak to someone. That's if I got through at all.

Karl & Matthew came to do dry lining. They left upstairs immaculate. And made sure Sky was all connected after moving tv. They took care of my things and moved furniture as needed. They were cheerful and explained lots. When there was a small glitch they called the office 5 times to try to get it fixed.

John, Callum and Kris. Solar PV installers came a day early to install the solar panels. I had a call asking if they could arrive early. (yes please!) They were extremely careful to keep my side gate shut, to keep dog safe while doing many trips. Solar panels look tidy though I am not qualified to say its a great job. They worked quickly, were polite and nice to my dog (top marks!)I then had smart meter fitted and told lucky house had not burnt down as solar electrician had left electric wire loose so I would not recommend them.

Plumbers installed the heating and it was pandemonium. The house was full of pipes and tools. By the time they finished it was 15th working day. I had been told 10. And still huge holes in kitchen and bathroom for extractor fans, my external light outside removed, and plug sockets and switches hanging off the wall. The heating was turned on Friday & failed on Friday. Plumber returned Saturday & heating failed on Sunday. Called the company 3 times on Monday. Was promised callbacks by 2 but none materialised. Last call was on hold for 35 mins & gave up. A very unhappy customer -the 6th week. Heating still does not work for more than 2 hours. Eventually someone replaced a part that was "knackered" (2 weeks old) and it is now fully functional.

The plasterers made a phenomenal mess and later my decorator said it was a poor job with plaster splashes all over the place that he said should have been wiped at the time. They also knocked the BT socket so I had no internet for a week & I had to get BT to put in a new socket.

The electricians drilled a large hole in the bathroom wall for an extractor fan and none was fitted for 6 weeks. So I was unable to shower for 6 weeks and it was extremely cold. The electricians also switched off the electric to my outside workshop causing me to lose a freezer full of food. The electrician claimed that he did not interfere with the supply and said I had an illegal supply that was not routed through my house meter. Later a different electrician (all from CES) said the supply HAD been cut off and said he had reconnected it. But after reconnection the power to the plug sockets no longer works and I am left with them not working. The company says it is not their responsibility although they have indicated they will compensate for lost food. I am very upset about this. And extremely upset that the electrician lied about my supply causing me much worry. I feel that is a sackable offence.

It all took longer than expected. Rubbish was left outside for weeks. Stuff was left all over the place, screws and fittings for things removed and dumped in odd places.

I even wrote to the company CEO but did not receive a reply. I feel the company admin have tried to sort the many problems but would not recommend them as the workmen, apart from dry liners, were not very good at all. I also requested that my picture rails were left for my handyman to replace but there's a piece missing. A painting was damaged. All in all little respect shown. I think a smaller company would be more efficient.
