To build a 8x12 foot garden room to a complete and satisfactory standard

"I initially contacted Allan at ASN Timberworx on 4th June 2024 to request information on replacing an existing fence, as well as building a garden room.

He was prompt to respond and arrange a site visit to discuss details. With regards to the fence, he indicated that he could book the work in within approximately 6 weeks. He visited on the weekend of 11-12th July to carry out this work, which was done to a satisfactory standard.

I then proceeded to use ASN Timberworx/Allan to carry out the job of building our garden room (big mistake). Allan indicated to me that the entire job would take approximately 10 working days, and that because he was sub-contracting he would fit this work in around his other commitments. I received a quotation from him on 19th July for cost of materials and payment was made the following day.

A further payment was made on 31st July for additional materials (windows). On 11th September I sent Allan a follow up message to query when work would commence, having not heard anything further from him. He attended site on 13th September to start the job. I sent a further follow up message to him on 19th September querying when he would be back as again, had not heard anything from him.

During the days/weeks that followed, Allan would turn turn up at irregular times (after telling me he would be on site around 8am most days). On one occasion he turned up for an hour only to disappear for his induction at the gym, returning over 3 hours later...

As work slowly progressed, we were given a strong indication that the project would be complete by mid-October (before Allan went on holiday, and by which time he was no longer sub-contracting - so one less excuse).

Unfortunately this was not to be the case. Blame was mainly placed on "supplier issues" or poor weather. However, as aforementioned, Allan often did not appear on site until late morning. So whilst "supplier issues" may have played a part...

Excess materials/cut offs were left on site for over 2 weeks, despite telling us that he would return to uplift within a couple of days. I had to chase him about this twice as they were restricting access to our driveway. On one occasion I actually took excess materials (flooring insulation) to the dump myself, as he had left them sitting for several days.

To date, we still have one faulty lock, missing windowsill caps, and we have had to employ the services of another tradesperson to fit our skirting boards - something that Allan had agreed to do free of charge as an acknowledgement of all the hassle/delays we have experienced. Note - the skirting boards were on site from 4th November...

Upon advising Allan that we were keen to have the remaining work completed, and as such were considering other options (as well as sharing our review), this was met with little interest or concern. In fact, the attitude towards a paying customer was pretty shocking. I guess he feels he has made his money out of this job so has lost interest.

Too many wasted days/weeks have passed where there should have been ample opportunity for any decent tradesperson to carry out the work, but I gather it just isn't a priority for Allan.

Our general impression is that Allan has treated the job like he was doing us a favour, never mind the fact he was getting paid for the courtesy. He seemed to show some humility when confronted about things a couple of weeks ago, but has since failed to back this up and put things right. In fact, when a similar review to this was posted on his social media page, he was very quick to send a message stating "find someone else to do the work for you!" and "Good luck getting anyone to sort it out for you". Not the level of professionalism you would expect when paying out such a large sum of money.

So, just like good service deserves to be recognised, so does bad service. Hence there is little hesitation in me sharing this review for all to see."

"Great service from start to finish. Easy to contact via Facebook/Messenger. Allan came out quickly to provide a quote for the work. All materials required were ordered and delivered to our address and work started shortly after. Communication was very good throughout, any changes were discussed and we were more than happy with the changes required to work round issues caused by neighbouring trees. Friendly and approachable service. Wouldn't hesitate to use again and recommend."
